President Donald Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act to deploy military forces into U.S. cities like Chicago, claiming it’s needed to “suppress crime.” Meanwhile, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker sharply condemned the move, accusing Trump of turning troops into “political props.”
“In the dead of night and seemingly for the cameras, armed federal agents emerged from the Black Hawk helicopters, rappelling onto the roof of that apartment building,” Pritzker said. Experts suggest invoking the 1807 law could spark a constitutional showdown, raising more questions about presidential power.
Trump maintains that the move is justified, saying that courts, mayors, or governors blocking his agenda could prompt the use of the Insurrection Act. “If people were being killed, and courts were holding us up, or governors or mayors were holding us up, sure I’d do that,” he said.
