The Trump administration plans to fine migrants up to $998 daily if they refuse to leave after deportation orders, according to documents obtained by Reuters. As a senior Trump official stated, the administration could impose these fines retroactively for up to five years. It could potentially lead to penalties exceeding $1 million.
According to Reuters, Customs and Border Protection will oversee the issuance of these penalties and asset seizures.
The Department of Homeland Security warned that migrants could face additional fines and possible jail time if they don’t self-deport.
