President Donald Trump held a telephone rally on Monday to urge New Jersey voters to support Republican Jack Ciattarelli in the upcoming gubernatorial primary. Trump endorsed Ciattarelli last month amid a competitive GOP primary and emphasized early in-person voting beginning Tuesday ahead of the June 10 primary.

Ciattarelli, a former state lawmaker who shifted from critic to vocal supporter of Trump, pledged to end sanctuary policies and appoint an attorney general who will not sue the White House. Trump characterized New Jersey as a state burdened by high taxes and crime, suggesting that voters are prepared to move away from longstanding Democratic leadership and support a candidate who will bring about meaningful change.

The endorsement and rally aim to strengthen Ciattarelli’s lead against multiple GOP rivals and challenge Democratic dominance despite New Jersey’s 800,000-voter registration Democratic advantage.
