President Donald Trump said that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney apologized for an Ontario government ad that used comments from Ronald Reagan about free trade in a message opposing tariffs. The ad, released on Tuesday, October 14, drew criticism from the Reagan Foundation for what it called a misleading use of Reagan’s words.

Trump described the ad as “fraudulent and fake” and said he suspended trade discussions with Canada as a result. Ontario Premier Doug Ford later paused the campaign after it aired during the World Series.

Trump also noted his positive relationship with Carney, pointing to a dinner they shared at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit, but asserted that the use of Reagan’s remarks was inappropriate.
