In late June, the Trump administration helped facilitate an agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo seeking to end a decades-old conflict between the two neighbors. Since then, the U.S. president has suggested that he effectively ended the war.
“For 35 years, it was a vicious war,” President Trump said on Monday, according to ABC News. “Nine million people were killed with machetes. I stopped it…I got it stopped and saved lots of lives.”

Conflict experts and local residents, however, say that’s not the case. The Associated Press reports that a final peace agreement between the two nations has stalled, and both sides are now accusing the other of having violated the terms of the June agreement. The fighting has continued in the meantime, with multiple hot spots erupting into conflict.
