While President Donald Trump’s unprecedented move to federalize Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department has drawn criticism from many, the D.C. Police Union is supporting the move. Trump cited a rise in violent crime as the reason he is deploying the National Guard to assume policing duties and restore order for at least 30 days after his executive order takes effect.
D.C. leaders, including Mayor Muriel Bowser, have spoken against the move and noted a decline in overall violent crime in the district. Meanwhile, police union chairman Greg Pemberton stated that the department needs reinforcements to ensure it can operate effectively.
