President Donald Trump told donors during a private Oval Office meeting that he wants his vice president, JD Vance, to win the 2028 presidential election, The Washington Post reported this week.

“At the end of the day, we need to elect JD,” Trump said at the meeting, according to two people who spoke to The Post anonymously.

Still, other advisers and allies close to Trump said they aren’t convinced he’s made up his mind about Vance. Trump tells different things to different people, the Post wrote, and could still change his mind.

“Vance has done a lot of political work in the last year and a half,” one Trump adviser said.

For his part, Vance has not publicly said what his 2028 plans are. In an interview with CBS News in June, Vance said he’ll discuss whether to run with his wife, Usha, after the midterm elections.

“I have no doubt that the president of the United States is going to be very supportive of anything that I ultimately decide to do,” Vance said to CBS.
