U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that he is discussing the plight of missing and abducted children with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Over 19,000 Ukrainian children have been reported abducted and forcibly transferred to Russia since Russia’s full-scale invasion three and a half years ago, and their safe return is a high priority for Ukraine.

Von der Leyen stated: “Every single child has to go back to its family. This should be one of our main priorities in these negotiations.”

The meeting comes as leaders around the world, including in the United States, hope to organize a trilateral Trump-Putin-Zelenskyy meeting to discuss the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Foreign policy experts remain cautiously skeptical about the prospects of any permanent peace deal, however, raising concerns about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s true intentions and his repeated demands for Ukraine to cede territory.
