U.S. President Donald Trump is imposing a 10% tariff on buses as part of a new tariffs package aimed at larger vehicles. Observers say the tariff will raise transportation costs in a variety of ways throughout North America, including higher transit property taxes, transit fares and parking fees.
The tariff primarily impacts Canada’s bus sector, which has already been hit hard by Trump’s new tariffs on steel and aluminum. Buses and bus components frequently cross the U.S.-Canada border during production, meaning that costs must account for much more than just the new 10% fee.

Rebecca Bligh, president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, warned that the new tariffs would eliminate thousands of Canadian manufacturing jobs while also driving up transit fares for Canadians, according to CTV News.
Experts warned, however, that the increasing costs would impact all North American cities, including cities throughout the United States.
