Iryna Zarutska, 23, was stabbed to death on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Friday night. She had recently arrived as a refugee from the war in Ukraine, and had come to the United States seeking a new home and a new start, according to her family’s GoFundMe. She died at the scene from her wounds.

CCTV footage recorded the assault as Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, stabbed the victim three times. Brown is set to be charged with first-degree murder, according to The Independent.

Brown has a lengthy criminal record and previously served a six-year sentence for crimes including armed robbery and larceny. He was arrested for assault again in 2022 after his release in 2020.
