The United Nations expressed concern over the Taliban’s arrests of Afghan women and girls for alleged dress code violations, which occurred between July 16 and 19. The Taliban government issued a dress code decree in May 2022, requiring women to show only their eyes and recommending wearing a burqa.

The U.N. mission stated these incidents contribute to a climate of fear and erode public trust in Afghanistan.

The U.N. urged the Taliban to rescind restrictions on women’s rights, particularly regarding education beyond sixth grade.
