Video footage shows an unidentified masked individual breaking through the driver’s side window of a car at a traffic stop in San Bernardino, California, around 8:40 Sunday morning. The individual punched the driver in the face and began attacking him after breaking through his window. The video then shows the driver driving the vehicle away to escape.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says that this was all part of a targeted immigration enforcement operation, and that the unidentified individuals were officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). DHS said that the driver refused to exit his vehicle when armed individuals stopped him at a traffic stop and demanded that he exit the car, and that the driver then drove his vehicle towards ICE officers as he fled, hitting two agents.

DHS says that officers then fired multiple shots at the vehicle, which had three family members inside. None of them were reportedly shot. DHS maintains that the shots were fired in self-defense, but the family says that they were the victims of an unprovoked assault and shooting by unidentified men.
San Bernardino police received 911 calls about the gunfire and responded to the scene, but were reportedly unable to intervene. The family also reported the assault to the police when they got home, but officers made no arrests and left the family’s house while ICE officials were still there. Police later returned to provide crowd control after a large crowd formed outside the family’s home.
