Art Markman, a psychology professor at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin, said he was dismissed from his role as an academic administrator after 27 years at the university as a result of his ideological beliefs. Texas Governor Greg Abbot confirmed on Sunday that his administration is targeting professors with left-leaning beliefs who he claims are professing left-leaning ideologies.

The professor declined to be interviewed about the incident when contacted by Axios. University officials also declined to respond.

Markman’s colleagues and fellow faculty members celebrated him on social media. Elizabeth Keating, a UT professor of linguistic anthropology, said that he showed “[a] love of teaching, passion for excellence,” and that he was “truly maximizing the potential of a university to inspire to greatness.”

UT is one of a handful of schools that have welcomed President Donald Trump’s demands for right-leaning academic reforms at U.S. universities in exchange for preferential federal funding.
