Many U.S. adults support increasing security at the southern border, with half believing it should be a high priority for the federal government, according to the AP-NORC poll. The vast majority of U.S. adults favor deporting immigrants convicted of violent crimes, while support for deporting all immigrants living illegally is divided, with about 4 in 10 in favor and opposed.

Most Americans think local police should cooperate with federal immigration authorities on deportations but arrests in sensitive places like schools and churches are largely unpopular.

The poll indicates that while there is support for some deportations, many Americans are conflicted about mass roundups of people living in the U.S. Illegally.
