The U.S. State Department has placed Brazil and South Africa on its Tier 2 Watch List in the latest Trafficking in Persons report. The department cites ongoing limitations in efforts to combat human trafficking.
Both nations could face sanctions from the United States if they don’t take actionable steps to mitigate their human trafficking issues. In Brazil, the government reported fewer investigations, prosecutions and convictions for trafficking-related crimes compared to previous years.
Meanwhile, South Africa, as it established its first local anti-trafficking task forces, saw a decline in victim identification and launched fewer investigations and prosecutions overall. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called human trafficking a “horrific and devastating crime,” reaffirming the administration’s intent to confront the issue globally and hold partner nations accountable.
