The 2024 “nation’s report card” from the National Assessment of Education Progress says that reading and math scores for U.S. high school students continue to drop, with 12th-grader scores reaching their lowest point in 20 years. Only 33% of high school seniors met the standard level for college readiness in math, a sharp decline from previous years.

The report showed that female students experienced a steeper decline in STEM scores than males. The findings also showed a significant decline in 8th-grader science scores.

The report is considered one of the most authoritative annual measurements of U.S. academic performance, according to the Associated Press.

Matthew Soldner, acting commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics, said: “These results should galvanize all of us to take concerted and focused action to accelerate student learning.”
