The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Trump v. Cook on Jan. 21, 2026. President Trump moved to fire Cook from the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in August.

Presidents may only fire governors at the board for cause, which has traditionally meant “malfeasance in office,” according to Politico.

The Supreme Court has permitted Cook to remain in her role for the time being, following a lower court’s determination that Trump’s attempt to fire her was unlawful.

In that ruling, Judge Jia Cobb wrote that “Cook has made a strong showing that her purported removal was done in violation of the Federal Reserve Act’s ‘for cause’ provision,” according to CNBC.
