A 28-year-old Georgia mother, Amber Nicole Thurman, died after not receiving timely care due to the state’s abortion law, according to a ProPublica report. Thurman developed a rare complication from abortion pills and died during emergency surgery in August 2022, labeled as a “preventable” outcome by a state committee.
Georgia’s new law made dilation and curettage a felony, causing confusion around medical exceptions, which led to critical delays in care. The Supreme Court in October 2023 ruled that Georgia’s six-week abortion ban was constitutional and could remain in place.
