A motion by the Vancouver council in Canada to oppose the deployment of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at the FIFA World Cup was ruled “out of order,” as the meeting chair said there’s no indication the agency will be there.
The motion, according to the CBC, said letting allegedly undertrained foreign ICE agents to conduct security operations in Vancouver contradicted city policies about equity, safety and access without fear, as well as Canadian migrants’ rights.
However, Coun. Mike Klassen said it was “made clear from correspondence” received by the council ICE won’t be present for the games.
“U.S. agencies have zero jurisdiction, zero authority to conduct law enforcement in Canada,” another councillor noted.
