On September 12, an ICE agent shot and killed 38-year-old Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez during a traffic stop in Franklin Park, Illinois. The victim was killed moments after dropping his two children off at a nearby elementary school and daycare.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claimed that an agent fired his weapon after suffering multiple serious injuries and as the victim was driving a vehicle towards him, but new video footage obtained by NBC’s Chicago team debunks that claim, revealing that the agent suffered no serious injury and that the victim was driving his car in reverse (not towards any agents) as two agents physically grabbed ahold of the car’s window frames.

The agent who killed Villegas-Gonzalez remained on the scene afterwards, walking around and talking with local authorities. When asked if he was okay, he repeatedly signaled yes, said that he was fine, or else explained that he had only a few scratches, including a “left knee injury and some lacerations, elbow…Nothing major. Nothing major.”

DHS also described Villegas-Gonzalez as a “criminal illegal alien,” but the victim had no criminal record and had only ever been stopped for minor traffic violations.

Federal law enforcement authorities have reportedly refused to provide any further information on the incident. Human Rights Watch, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and some Democratic politicians have called for an independent investigation into the killing.
