Virginia Democrat proposes bill to change nonprofit oversight

Virginia State Delegate Jessica Anderson, a Democrat, proposed House Bill 1369, which would prevent the state from verifying nonprofit eligibility for federal benefits.

“No state agency responsible for the administration of federal funds shall impose a requirement on a nonprofit charitable organization providing a federal public benefit to determine, verify, or otherwise require proof of eligibility of any applicant for such benefits,” the one-page bill said.

Her proposition follows a fraud scandal in Minnesota linked to nonprofits that misused taxpayer funds, where billions were reportedly lost.

At least 78 individuals were charged in the Minnesota fraud case known as the ‘Feeding Our Future’ scandal, leading to increased scrutiny on taxpayer money. Critics argue that the bill could replicate the Minnesota fraud issues in Virginia, raising concerns about misuse of public funds.
