Democratic lawmakers in Virginia are preparing to redraw the state’s congressional maps in an effort to secure two to three additional House seats, according to Mandara Meyers, executive director of the political advocacy group The States Project. Right now, Democrats hold six of the state’s eleven congressional districts.
The move would bypass the existing independent redistricting commission established under Virginia’s constitution by using a constitutional amendment process that requires the legislature to approve the change in two separate sessions, then refer the measure to voters. Meanwhile, Republicans in Virginia are also pursuing new maps to improve their electoral position ahead of the 2026 elections.
For maps to be approved, the Virginia General Assembly must vote twice, followed by a public referendum.
