Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodríguez told lawmakers at the National Assembly in Caracas that she does not fear diplomatic confrontation with the United States. She gave the previously scheduled state of the nation address in Nicolás Maduro’s absence.
Rodríguez said that if she visits Washington, D.C., in the future, “I will go standing, walking, not dragged.”

Facing U.S. pressure, Rodríguez balances the White House’s conditions on access to Venezuela’s oil resources while maintaining support from Venezuela’s security forces and feared paramilitaries. She said she insists on diplomatic solutions because her regime views the U.S. as a “powerful and lethal country.”
On Wednesday, Rodríguez and President Donald Trump spoke over the phone. Rodríguez described the call as “productive and courteous,” while Trump said on social media they discussed “many topics” and called Rodríguez “a terrific person.”
