‘We don’t want them here’: Los Angeles mayor says of Guard troops

On June 6, about 30,000 people protested immigration raids in downtown Los Angeles amid the deployment of 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines. The protests followed Trumpโ€™s order for mass deportations, causing fear and economic disruption in the heavily Latino city despite local officials claiming control over the situation.

Mayor Karen Bass asserted local law enforcement had full control. She denied seeing Marines on the streets during a helicopter flight and described most protests as peaceful despite some violence.

“We don’t want them here,” Bass said.

The Guard issued roughly 30 citations, and injuries occurred on both sides during unrest spanning 15 locations in the city.

The mayor imposed a curfew on June 10 to prevent vandalism and looting, while court rulings and criticism from California officials highlighted disputes over federal troop deployment.
