Chinese President Xi Jinping is urging U.S. President Donald Trump to formally oppose Taiwanese independence, according to The Wall Street Journal. At the same time, Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung is urging the United Nations General Assembly to formally recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation.

The Chinese president has repeatedly said that what he calls the “reunification” of Taiwan with mainland China is inevitable, and has previously set a military deadline of 2027, urging Chinese forces to be ready to capture the island by force if necessary by the end of that year. Some U.S. military analysts have warned that the Chinese leader might even make a move against Taiwan prior to that deadline.

According to the Journal, China will ask that the United States formally state its explicit opposition to an independent Taiwan, which would actively align the U.S. with China and against Taiwan.

That’s a break from current and previous U.S. positions, which provided aid and support to Taiwan while refraining from formally recognizing either an independent Taiwan or China’s claim over the island, the so-called “strategic ambiguity” approach.
