YouTube’s parent company, Alphabet, said it would reinstate banned accounts that lost access to the platform during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic after violating the Community Guidelines. The Biden administration asked YouTube, as well as other platforms, to remove misleading information about vaccines, virus severity and ineffective treatments.

Alphabet said it would allow those banned accounts to apply for reinstatement to the platform if they were removed for policies “that are no longer in effect.” Over the past few years, YouTube has revised its guidelines to ease restrictions on content related to COVID-19.

The move comes after pressure from Republican officials on social media companies to walk back Biden-era speech constraints on the virus and other political misinformation. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said the move is a significant win for free speech.
