  • Fox News is being called out for publishing a story featuring SNAP beneficiaries on camera… but several of those videos were actually created by AI. The original headline published Friday read: “SNAP beneficiaries threaten to ransack stores over government shutdown.” The article – written by a production assistant – cited social media reaction… and referred to the people in the AI clips as real users online. But after users pointed out the videos weren’t real… Fox kept the article up… Just changed the headline… and added an editor’s note admitting the videos were AI. Fox has not responded to the backlash… but many are calling for the article to be taken down. While AI is making it harder to tell what’s real from what’s fake… there are still some telltale signs. Take that first video we showed you… You’ll notice patches of blur or graininess – like on the cola bottle – which is normally a common AI artifact. AI also struggles with written words. Look at the shirt… it appears to say “Born to be…” but the letters after “B-O-R-N” are gibberish. The bottom text also doesn’t form recognizable letters. Many are accusing Fox of feeding into racist and classist tropes… since most of the AI videos feature Black women. This is another video that was deleted Monday morning… not shared by Fox – but making rounds on social media. On the microphone… what should say “NEWS” under the 5 does not actually make out a four-letter word. But perhaps the biggest giveaway is… we fact-checked the source. When going to the original poster’s TikTok video listed on the watermark… there is a label on the video that says “Contains AI generated media.” The user also hashtagged the video “AI.” Fox News’ article is just one example of how quickly AI is testing media literacy. Creators online are now dedicating their platforms to teaching people how to spot what’s real… and they’re racing against a technology that’s advancing just as fast as people are suspecting.
