Drug cartels are fighting to control portions of the border fence that have large enough gaps to smuggle migrants through. Gangs that control access points into the U.S. also control the lucrative human smuggling operation.

Law enforcement sources told Fox that the conflict is what started the latest shootout that led to officials seizing 10 explosives on Mexico’s side of the border.

A person involved was arrested on the U.S. side in possession of an AK-47, two loaded AK magazines, a hand gun, and more ammunition. Agents point to the arrest as further evidence that the U.S.-Mexico border is dangerous for agents, migrants, and nearby residents.

Instead of going home for Christmas break, the U.S. Senate will be staying in Washington to progress on an aid deal that is strapped to a Republican request to address the border before sending aid to Ukraine and Israel.

Negotiations are facing a contentious time as Democrats stress that without more foreign aid, it would stunt Ukraine on the battlefield. Republicans maintain that without addressing current border policy, an influx of illegal immigration will continue to worsen a humanitarian crisis on U.S. soil.
