TTS, or thrombocytopenia syndrome, causes the body to produce blood clots and a low blood platelet count. It can also be a side effect of taking certain medications, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Fifty-one families are suing the pharmaceutical giant. The first case was brought by a man named Jamie Scott, a husband and father of two, who received the vaccine in April 2021. Scott said the vaccine left him with a permanent brain injury. He claims he developed a blood clot and brain bleed that prevented him from working.

Lawyers for AstraZeneca acknowledge the vaccine can cause TTS; however, they don’t accept that their vaccine caused Scott to experience TTS.

Scott’s wife told the publication she hopes the admission will allow them to resolve the issue “sooner rather than later.” She added that she wants an apology and fair compensation for her family and others that have been affected.

AstraZeneca released a statement saying, “the vaccine has continuously been shown to have an acceptable safety profile and regulators around the world consistently state that the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks of extremely rare potential side effects.”

Victims’ families are seeking damages up to £100 million, equivalent to just over $125 million.
