Hurricane Elsa may halt Surfside search and rescue efforts

Full story

Search and rescue efforts continued Friday at the site of the Surfside, Florida building collapse. Officials say 20 people are confirmed dead and 128 remain unaccounted for.

The next few days are crucial as the state braces for the potential impact of Hurricane Elsa.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said state and local leaders are prepared to undertake routine hurricane preparations while they continue to support and monitor ongoing search efforts.

The latest forecast for Elsa shows Florida in the storm’s cone of uncertainty. The National Hurricane Center warned of a risk of storm surge, wind, and rainfall impacts in the Florida Keys and parts of the southern Florida peninsula early next week.

Miami Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava says plans are in the works to demolish the remaining building. However, demolition efforts will not happen for at least a couple of weeks.
