Liz Cheney: Trump’s loudest GOP critic, Democrats’ anti-Trump ally

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is gearing up for one of the most anticipated congressional midterm races of 2022. Cheney is building up her war chest to fend off at least four other Republican candidates, including one backed by former President Donald Trump. Trump hopes to use his political clout to unseat Wyoming’s lone congresswoman. Cheney has been extremely critical of Trump and the leaders within her party.

“If I were doing what he’s doing, I would be deeply ashamed of myself,” Cheney said of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, in an interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes”. She believes McCarthy should have taken a tougher stance against Trump following the Jan. 6 attacks on the Capitol.

In response to constant criticism of the former president, House Republicans booted her from her leadership position as the third-ranking Republican in the House.

In July, Cheney accepted a position on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, further isolating herself from Trump and Republicans who support him.

Cheney told CBS correspondent Lesley Stahl she still has the best chances of being re-elected next fall.

“I think it’s going to be the most important house race in the country in 2022,” Cheney said. “And it will be one where people have an opportunity to say we want to stand for the constitution.”
