Liz Cheney: Trump’s loudest GOP critic, Democrats’ anti-Trump ally

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is gearing up for one of the most anticipated congressional midterm races of 2022. Cheney is building up her war chest to fend off at least four other Republican candidates, including one backed by former President Donald Trump. Trump hopes to use his political clout to unseat Wyoming’s lone congresswoman. Cheney has been extremely critical of Trump and the leaders within her party.

“If I were doing what he’s doing, I would be deeply ashamed of myself,” Cheney said of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, in an interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes”. She believes McCarthy should have taken a tougher stance against Trump following the Jan. 6 attacks on the Capitol.

In response to constant criticism of the former president, House Republicans booted her from her leadership position as the third-ranking Republican in the House.

In July, Cheney accepted a position on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, further isolating herself from Trump and Republicans who support him.

Cheney told CBS correspondent Lesley Stahl she still has the best chances of being re-elected next fall.

“I think it’s going to be the most important house race in the country in 2022,” Cheney said. “And it will be one where people have an opportunity to say we want to stand for the constitution.”

JIMMIE JOHNSON: IS SHE THE HEIR TO THE NEXT POLITICAL DYNASTY OR THE NEXT TO BITE THE DUST IN THE GOP?

CONGRESSWOMAN LIZ CHENEY, JUST ONE NAME YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY.

CHENEY IS THE DAUGHTER OF FORMER VICE PRESIDENT DICK CHENEY — AND WYOMING’S LONE MEMBER OF THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

SHE CONSIDERS HERSELF ONE OF THE MOST CONSERVATIVE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE, YET SHE’S FIND HERSELF ALONE IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.

SEAN HANNITY: “You were removed from leadership because you put your selfish agenda in front of the party’s selfish agenda.”

JIMMIE: BACK IN MAY, MUCH OF THE RIGHT CELEBRATED WHEN CHENEY WAS GIVEN THE BOOT AS HOUSE REPUBLICAN CHAIR — THE THIRD-RANKING HOUSE MEMBER IN HER PARTY.

CHENEY’S FALLOUT STEMS FROM HER ONGOING FEUD WITH FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP – MAKING HER  A LOVE CHILD FOR MANY ON THE LEFT.

CONGRESSMAN JAMIE RASKIN: “The former president’s most reliable supporters in the House tried to cancel out Representative Cheney because of her courageous and patriotic defense of the republic, the truth, and the constitution.”

JIMMIE: SHE CONDEMNED TRUMP’S CLAIMS THAT THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION WAS STOLEN.

THEN-PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: ”The Liz Cheneys of the world. We got to get rid of them”

THEN, SHE VOTED TO IMPEACH HIM FOR INCITING THE INSURRECTION ON JANUARY SIXTH.

CHENEY: ”I will do everything I can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near the oval office.”

JIMMIE: SINCE HER POLITICAL DEMOTION, CHENEY IS STILL RUFFLING REPUBLICAN FEATHERS. SHE’S AMONG TWO REPUBLICAN MEMBERS ON THE DEMOCRATS’ SELECT COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE JANUARY SIXTH

CHENEY: “No member of Congress should not attempt to defend the indefensible…obstruct this investigation or whitewash what happened that day.”

JIMMIE: SHE ALSO WENT AFTER MINORITY LEADER KEVIN MCCARTHY FOR SUPPORTING TRUMP AFTER THE CAPITOL RIOTS.

CHENEY: “If I were doing what he’s doing, I would be deeply ashamed of myself”

JIMMIE: THIS BEGS THE QUESTION. HAS CHENEY COMMITTED POLITICAL SUICIDE OR ENDEARED HERSELF TO MAINSTREAM REPUBLICANS?

TIME WILL TELL WHEN SHE RUNS FOR RE-ELECTION IN 2022, AND HER ARCH-NEMESIS, DONALD TRUMP,  CAMPAIGNS AGAINST HER.

LESLEY STAHL: “Can you win this seat?

CHENEY: “Absolutely. I think it’s going to be the most important house race in the country in 2022. And it will be one where people have an opportunity to say we want to stand for the constitution.”

JIMMIE: MAKING CONGRESSWOMAN LIZ CHENEY. JUST ONE NAME YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY.
