#MenToo trending as Johnny Depp, Amber Heard trial nears end

Full story

Closing arguments in the trial between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard are expected Friday. In the weeks since the trial started, #MenToo has gained momentum on social media.

The #MenToo social movement started in India in 2018 in response to false sexual harassment allegations in the #MeToo movement.

One Twitter user wrote, “The default setting in our society is that men are the abusers and women are the victims. And for men, it’s guilty until proven innocent. Both sides of the story need to be heard before believing one side over the other and casting judgment.”

Depp is suing Heard for libel in Fairfax County Circuit Court over a December 2018 op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post describing herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.” His lawyers have said he was defamed by the article even though it never mentioned his name.

Depp has denied he ever struck Heard and said she was the abuser in the relationship. Heard has testified about more than a dozen separate instances of physical abuse she said she suffered at Depp’s hands.
