New data reveals effectiveness of Virginia red flag laws

Full story

It has been two years since Virginia passed red flag laws and new data is giving people a glimpse into the effectiveness of the laws. These results are being released as efforts are underway by Republicans to repeal the laws passed in 2020 by Democrat-controlled state houses.

Between July 2020 and August 2022, judges issued 327 emergency substantial risk protection orders, according to The Center Square.

Substantial risk protection orders allow police to temporarily confiscate guns to address an immediate risk. Judges also issued 257 permanent substantial risk protection orders, which allow police to confiscate guns permanently.

VFTP did not disclose how many guns were taken in each order.
