Russia captures Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant as fighting intensifies

Full story

A fire at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine has been extinguished. Ukrainian officials said the fire started after Russian forces fired on it. Radiation was not released during the incident.

“Europeans, please wake up. Tell your politicians – Russian troops are shooting at a nuclear power plant in Ukraine,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a video address translated by Reuters.

Russian troops have made gains in the south of Ukraine, but there is also intense fighting in the area surrounding Kyiv.

The Times reported Zelenskyy, who has remained in the capital city, has survived three assassination attempts within a week and that all three were thwarted by anti-war members of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB).
