Schools are scrambling without enough bus drivers. Where did they go?

Full story

School districts across the country have reported a struggle to staff their buses with enough drivers to transport all the students to and from class.

According to a survey conducted by HopSkipDrive, 78 percent of the school districts that participated said they were “constrained by the bus driver shortage.” 81 percent of those surveyed said the pandemic has exacerbated existing shortages.

Because commercial drivers licenses require an average of 7 weeks of training, potential replacements are not readily available to fill the positions.

As a solution to the issue, some politicians have called for the National Guard to get behind the wheel. In Massachusetts, they’ve already arrived and begun working as temporary bus drivers.
