‘Stealth’ COVID variant more transmissible, less severe

Full story

As COVID continues to evolve, public health officials are tracking a new variant, dubbed BA.2. The new variant is the latest Covid virus mutation to cause problems around the globe.

The American Medical Association described BA.2 as a “stealth” strain because of the way it shows up on tests. It is said to be 50-60% more transmissible than Omicron, but not as severe. U.S. health experts said BA.2 accounts for about 30% of new Covid cases in the U.S.

“Our goal is to keep people out of the hospital, it’s to save their lives,” U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy said on Fox News Sunday, “We have more tools to do that than ever before. So our goal should be on preparation, not on panic. And if we get people these tools-vaccines, boosters, treatments-then we can actually get through waves as they come and go.”
