Former President Donald Trump faces new federal charges, and a major pharmacy chain lets go thousands of its employees amid a company restructuring. These stories and more highlight The Rundown for Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2023.

Former President Trump faces new federal charges

Special Counsel Jack Smith announced new federal charges against Trump on Tuesday, Aug 1. The former president was indicted for attempts to overturn the 2020 election. This is the third time in four months Trump has been criminally charged.

The four-count, 45-page indictment charges Trump in three criminal conspiracies. The first accuses him of a conspiracy to defraud the U.S. using “dishonesty, fraud and deceit.”

Trump was also accused of attempting to obstruct the election’s official proceeding, specifically with the counting of Electoral College votes on Jan. 6, 2021. The third conspiracy regarded disenfranchising voters.

Prosecutors said Trump pressured state and federal officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, to alter election results. Trump is currently the Republican frontrunner in the 2024 presidential election. His team issued a response to the latest charges on Truth Social.

“The lawlessness of these persecutions of President Trump and his supporters is reminiscent of Nazi Germany in the 1930s, the former Soviet Union, and other authoritarian, dictatorial regimes,” the statement read. “These un-American witch hunts will fail and President Trump will be re-elected to the White House so he can save our country from the abuse, incompetence, and corruption that is running through the veins of our country at levels never seen before.”

The former president is due in federal court in Washington on Thursday.

Media outlets report on likely co-conspirators

The federal indictment also included six unnamed co-conspirators who have not been charged. They are accused of helping Trump in the alleged crimes.

Numerous media outlets have reported on who these six people likely are based on the descriptions in the indictment. The media outlets include Reuters, ABC News, CNN, The New York Times, The Hill, and The Wall Street Journal. According to reports, the descriptions in the documents indicate the co-conspirators include:

These outlets say the identity of the sixth person is unclear. This person is described in the indictment as “a political consultant who helped implement a plan to submit fraudulent slates of presidential electors to obstruct the certification proceeding.”

Fitch downgrades U.S. over debt concerns

Fitch Ratings has downgraded the United States’ credit from its highest AAA rating to an AA+. The credit rating agency cited growing debt, the debt-ceiling standoff that almost led to a default and eroding political stability.

Despite the credit rating change, Fitch said, the American economy is still fundamentally strong. The White House said it strongly disagrees with the decision.

U.S. stock futures fell Wednesday morning in response to the news.

1,500 U.S. troops stationed at border to pull back

The Pentagon had previously deployed 1,500 troops to the U.S./Mexico border in May 2023. The move was made ahead of Title 42 expiring, when the U.S. was experiencing a surge in migrant crossings.

Those troops will soon be pulled back, with 1,100 of them leaving their posts at the border by next week. The other 400 will vacate by the end of August 2023.

Crossings surged in May to more than 10,000 encounters per day, prompting the assist from the military. According to Border Patrol officials, that number is now closer to 5,000 per day.

The troop withdrawal comes amid an ongoing legal battle over a buoy border wall Texas installed across the Rio Grande river.

CVS to slash 5,000 jobs as company shifts direction

CVS announced it will cut 5,000 jobs, largely among its corporate staff, in order to cut costs. The move is also part of a company re-direction to focus on its health services, like its walk-in clinics.

“The difficult decision we are making will set the company up for long-term success,” CVS said in a statement. The job cuts come as CVS was set to release its quarterly earnings report on Aug. 2.

Taylor Swift urged to postpone concerts amid hotel workers strike

Some California politicians are calling for an end of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. While the singer is scheduled to perform in Los Angeles at six sold-out shows this week, some are calling for her to postpone because hotel workers in the area are on strike.

The politicians signed an open letter to Swift, telling her that hotels are going to make major profit when she comes to town. They said the boost will help the hotel industry while its workers are in limbo over contract negotiations for higher pay.

Earlier in 2023, the Federal Reserve credited Swift for boosting the U.S. economy and tourism. The hotel industry is also having its strongest growth since the pandemic.
