US backs Taiwan’s effort to rejoin United Nations while China pushes back

Full story

China pushed back against Taiwan’s continued desire to rejoin the United Nations on Wednesday, according to Agence France-Presse. This comes after the U.S. expressed support for Taiwan’s effort.

“Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the UN system is not a political issue, but a pragmatic one,” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement on Tuesday.

People’s Republic of China leaders replaced Taiwanese leaders fifty years ago, based on a General Assembly vote. Taiwanese leaders–known as Republic of China representatives–fled the mainland in 1949 to avoid communist rule.
