Chicago Teachers Union President Claims Republicans Don’t Want Black Children to Read

As contract negotiations between the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools get underway, the union’s president said that conservatives do not want Black children to be able to read. Stacey Davis Gates, the union’s president, made the comment when she was asked about the union’s proposed $50 billion budget. It received pushback from conservative members of the school board for including provisions like keeping police out of schools and turning empty school buildings into migrant housing. Gates made the comment during an appearance on Fox News on Sunday, June 16.
