California expands access to in vitro fertilization with new law requiring insurers to cover it

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, D, signed a bill requiring large insurance companies to cover infertility treatments, including in vitro fertilization. Senate Bill 729 mandates coverage for infertility diagnosis and treatment, including a maximum of three egg retrievals and unlimited embryo transfers.
The legislation also expands healthcare benefits to LGBTQ+ individuals and couples attempting to have children, according to Newsom’s statement. About 1 in 8 couples experience fertility problems, with fertility treatments trending upwards, accounting for around 2% of birth in the U.S. in 2019.
