In his will, Lars Emil Bruun ordered the collection to remain hidden for 100 years, to be used only if Denmark’s national coin collection was ever destroyed. After a century, if the country remained safe, the collection could be sold to benefit his descendants. With a hundred years having passed, the wait is over.

After eight hours of bidding the first set of coins from Bruun’s collection was sold for $16.5 million. More auctions are set to come, with the collection likely to become the most expensive international coin collection ever sold.

Stack’s Bowers, the auction house handling the sales, described it as the most valuable collection of world coins ever to hit the market. The entire collection is insured for more than $72 million.

Now, as the collection is being sold off, collectors from around the world are eager to claim a piece. More auctions are planned in the coming years, and experts expect Bruun’s collection to continue drawing interest from some of the world’s wealthiest collectors.
