AUTHORITIES SAY A VIRAL SOCIAL MEDIA TREND LED NEARLY A DOZEN TEENAGERS TO LURE AND BEAT MEN IN ILLINOIS.
OVER THE SUMMER 10 17-YEAR-OLDS AND ONE 16-YEAR OLD FOUND THEIR VICTIMS USING ONLINE DATING APPS.
A 41-YEAR-OLD MAN TOLD POLICE HE WAS SET TO MEET SOMEONE HE CONNECTED WITH ONLINE.
ONCE HE ARRIVED TO A PARKING LOT IN A SUBURB OF CHICAGO…HE SAID A GROUP OF TEENAGE BOYS BEAT HIM AND DAMAGED HIS CAR. HE WAS ABLE TO ESCAPE THE AMBUSH AND REPORT THE INCIDENT TO LOCAL POLICE.
JUST TEN MINUTES LATER POLICE RESPOND A MILE AWAY TO ANOTHER ASSAULT. THIS TIME A 23-YEAR OLD WAS THE VICTIM.
ILLINOIS AUTHORITIES SAY HE WAS ALSO ATTACKED AND HIS CAR TIRES SLASHED.
THE MONTHS LONG INVESTIGATION TURNED UP SURVEILLANCE VIDEO CAPTURING ONE OF THE ATTACKS. POLICE WERE ABLE TO IDENTIFY SOME OF THE JUVENILES.
INVESTIGATORS SAY ALL TEENS TURNED THEMSELVES IN FOLLOWING THE CHARGES.
POLICE SAY THESE INCIDENTS SHOULD BE A CONVERSATION STARTER FOR PARENTS

TEENAGERS IN AUSTRALIA PARTICIPATED IN A SIMILAR CRIME. USING A DATING APP TO LURE MEN AND BEAT THEM ONCE THEY ARRIVE. AUTHORITIES SAY THE GROUPS RECORD THEMSELVES ATTACKING THE VICTIMS AND ROBBING THEM.
MULTIPLE CASES ACROSS THE COUNTRY HAVE BEEN REPORTED, POLICE SAY MANY OF THE VICTIMS IDENTIFY AS A MEMBER OF THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY.
ILLINOIS POLICE DID NOT SPECIFY WHAT THE TREND IS CALLED OR IF OTHER CASES HAVE BEEN REPORTED.
THE GROUP FACES VARIOUS FELONIES–
INCLUDING AGGRAVATED BATTERY, PROPERTY DAMAGE AND MOB ACTION
SOME FACE HATE CRIME CHARGES DUE TO RACIAL AND DEROGATORY TERMS USED DURING THE ATTACKS.
