As of Jan. 18, 47 members of Congress have said they won’t be running for re-election in the 2022 midterm election. Of those 47, 18 are Republicans and 29 are Democrats.
The latest to announce are Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-CA) and Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI).
“It’s time time for me to chart a new course which I hope will keep me closer to home and allow me to spend more time with family and friends. As I turn the page on this chapter, I do so with the full confidence of the next generation of leaders,” Langevin said in a video announcing his retirement.
In total, 41 House Members and six in the Senate won’t seek re-election. 32 of them, including all six in the Senate, are retiring.
14 of the House members are running for other offices. Eight total, four from each party, are looking to move to the Capitol’s upper chamber. Three are running to be governor of their states.
Rep. Jody Hice (R-GA) is running to be Secretary of State of the Peach State. Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) wants to be mayor of Los Angeles, America’s second largest city. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) and Anthony Brown (D-MD) are both running to be attorney general of their states.
