In mid-January, the U.S. Army announced that the Joint Program Executive Office for Armaments & Ammunition (JPEO A&A) approved full-rate production of the M1147 120mm Advanced Multi-Purpose (AMP) round. It’s viewed as a key milestone in the Army’s ammunition modernization.

The approval allows for a shift from low-rate initial to full-scale manufacturing, enabling the consolidation of four legacy 120mm rounds into a single, versatile munition.

The M1147 AMP round enhances the firepower of Abrams Main Battle Tank crews, ensuring readiness for U.S. forces and allies in future combat scenarios. It replaces the M830, M830A1, M1028 and M908 rounds, simplifying logistics and addressing aging stockpile issues.

Equipped with a multi-mode programmable fuze, the M1147 AMP offers three modes: point detonate (PD) for direct impact, point detonate delay (PD-Delay) for penetrating structures, and airburst for targeting personnel and light vehicles.

The full-rate production approval concludes years of development aimed at improving the effectiveness of the Abrams tank fleet. The M1147 AMP simplifies ammunition management, reduces logistical burdens, and enhances the Army’s modernization efforts, as well as its interoperability with allies. It also ensures that Abrams-equipped forces remain dominant on the battlefield and are ready to engage various threats.

The full-rate production will enable the Army to rapidly field the M1147 AMP across its armored units, ensuring widespread availability and seamless integration into existing operations. This ongoing production effort will support the Army’s readiness initiatives while providing critical ammunition supplies to allied nations operating the Abrams platform.

The introduction of the M1147 AMP marks a decisive step in enhancing lethality, efficiency and operational effectiveness in current and future combat environments, solidifying the Abrams Main Battle Tank’s position as a cornerstone of modern armored warfare.

FROM SPORKS AND REVERSIBLE JACKETS TO SOFA BEDS AND TRANSITION LENSES.

ASK ANY DAD WHO’S EVER TRIED TO SAVE A BUCK IF MULTI-FUNCTIONAL IS THE WAY TO GO AND THEY’LL ALMOST CERTAINLY ANSWER IN THE AFFIRMATIVE.

WELL APPARENTLY THE ARMY FEELS THE SAME

IN MID-JANUARY THE JOINT PROGRAM EXECUTIVE OFFICER FOR ARMAMENTS AND AMMUNITION APPROVED FULL-RATE PRODUCTION OF THE M-ELEVEN-FORTY-SEVEN 120-MILLIMETER ADVANCED MULTI-PURPOSE ROUND.

THE M-ELEVEN-FORTY-SEVEN A-M-P GIVES ABRAMS TANK CREWS ADVANCED FIREPOWER THAT SHOULD MAKE THEM THE DOMINANT FORCE ON THE BATTLEFIELD.

WHAT PUTS THE MULTI-PURPOSE IN A-M-P? WELL, THIS PARTICULAR MUNITION TAKES THE PLACE OF  FOUR DIFFERENT 120 MILLIMETER ROUNDS—THE M-8-THIRTY HIGH EXPLOSIVE ANTI-TANK, M-8-THIRTY-A-1 MULTI-PURPOSE ANTI-TANK, M-TEN-TWENTY-EIGHT CANISTER, AND M-9-ZERO-8 OBSTACLE REDUCTION—AND COMBINES THEM INTO ONE SINGLE SOLUTION.

IT’S A BIG WIN FOR LOGISTICS, MAKING IT EASIER TO MANAGE THE ABRAMS’ AMMO AND TACKLE ISSUES WITH OLDER STOCKPILES, WHICH HELPS KEEP OPERATIONS RUNNING SMOOTHLY IN THE LONG RUN.

WHAT’S EVEN BETTER IS THE A-M-P ROUND GIVES TANK CREWS SOME FRESH CAPABILITIES TO TAKE ON THREATS LIKE ANTI-TANK GUIDED MISSILE TEAMS. IT ALSO HELPS THEM BREAK THROUGH DOUBLE REINFORCED CONCRETE WALLS, MAKING IT EASIER TO NAVIGATE IN URBAN SETTINGS AND FORTIFIED AREAS.

OVERALL THE DECISION TO GO INTO FULL RATE PRODUCTION IS A BIG ONE FOR THE ARMY’S AMMUNITION MODERNIZATION EFFORTS.
