White House sources who spoke to The Washington Post said Biden wants to see term limits for Supreme Court justices and an ethics code carrying repercussions if broken. Biden is also reportedly looking to push a constitutional amendment that will void the recent Supreme Court ruling that gave former President Donald Trump presidential immunity.
These changes would need congressional approval, which is unlikely with a split Congress.
Republicans are reacting negatively towards the suggested changes. For example, presidential candidate Trump opposed the potential updates in a post on Truth Social.
“The Radical Left Democrats are desperately trying to ‘Play the Ref’ by calling for an illegal and unConstitutional attack on our SACRED United States Supreme Court,” Trump’s post said.
As for the general population, a poll by Fox News showed that a record high of 81% are in favor of establishing an 18-year term limit of mandatory retirement age for the justices.
The same poll found that 38% of Americans approve of what the Supreme Court is currently doing — a record low.
