[LAUREN TAYLOR]
A TRAGIC CASE IN CALIFORNIA..
NEWLY RELEASED BODY-CAM FOOTAGE SHEDS LIGHT ON THE FATAL POLICE SHOOTING OF 15-YEAR-OLD RYAN GAINER IN SAN BERNARDINO.
DEPUTIES RESPONDED TO A 911 CALL — REPORTING ASSAULT AND PROPERTY DAMAGE.
WITHIN SECONDS OF DEPUTIES ARRIVING ON SCENE –
THE TEEN – WHO HAD AUTISM – ALLEGEDLY CHARGED AT A DEPUTY WHILE HOLDING A 5-FOOT-LONG GARDENING TOOL AT HIS FAMILY HOME IN APPLE VALLEY – LEADING TO THE FATAL SHOOTING.
BODYCAM FOOTAGE RELEASED BY THE SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT SHOWED THE MOMENTS LEADING UP TO THE SHOOTING – AND YOU CAN HEAR THE FIRST DEPUTY TRY TO DE-ESCALATE THE SITUATION – TELLING GAINER TO DROP THE TOOL OR HE WOULD BE SHOT.
YOU CAN ALSO HEAR GAINER’S FAMILY MEMBERS IN THE BACKGROUND OF THE VIDEO – QUESTIONING THE DEPUTIES’ ACTIONS, EXPRESSING SHOCK AND DISTRESS.
THE INCIDENT STEMMED FROM GAINER’S FRUSTRATION OVER NOT BEING ALLOWED TO LISTEN TO MUSIC ON HIS LAPTOP. ACCORDING TO THE FAMILY ATTORNEY, THE SITUATION HAD CALMED DOWN BEFORE DEPUTIES ARRIVED, AND GAINER HAD APOLOGIZED.
AND DESPITE UNCERTAINTIES ABOUT WHETHER AUTHORITIES WERE INFORMED OF GAINER’S AUTISM — THE ATTORNEY CLAIMS SOME DEPUTIES WERE FAMILIAR WITH HIM.
THE SHERIFF DEFENDED THE DEPUTIES’ ACTIONS, SPARKING BACKLASH FROM THE COMMUNITY.
INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE INCIDENT ARE ONGOING – AS CALLS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY GROW.
