Chinese drilling effort sets new record for deepest single-day dig

Share

The China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) announced a technological achievement during the week of Aug. 4, setting a new record for the deepest depth ever reached in a single day of drilling. The company successfully drilled more than 6,500 feet in just 24 hours, ultimately reaching an overall depth of over 24,000 feet.

During this project, the drilling operation penetrated 13 different layers of Earth. In order to accomplish this, CNPC utilized high-strength drill pipes, high-temperature-resistant drilling fluid capable of withstanding temperatures up to 428 degrees Fahrenheit and logging tools designed to function at depths of thousands of meters below the surface.
