AS WE INCH CLOSER TO EASTER SUNDAY, CHOCOLATE DESPAIR LOOMS ONCE AGAIN. THIS TIME, IT’S THE SOARING COST OF COCOA, THE ESSENTIAL INGREDIENT FOR OUR BELOVED TREATS, HITTING AN ALL TIME HIGH CLIMBING ABOVE $9,000 PER METRIC TON.
THESE UNPRECEDENTED PRICES ARE DRIVEN BY SEVERE HEAT AND DROUGHT CONDITIONS, PARTICULARLY IN AFRICA’S IVORY COAST AND GHANA, WHICH PRODUCE MORE THAN 60% OF THE WORLD’S COCOA. .
THE EL NIÑO PHENOMENON AND GLOBAL WARMING HAVE WORSENED CONDITIONS, LEADING TO HEAT WAVES WITH TEMPERATURES EXCEEDING 100 DEGREES. COCOA CROPS ARE NOW THREATENED BY FOREST FIRES AND THE SPREAD OF BLACK POD DISEASE.
UNFORTUNATELY, THIS SHARP INCREASE IN COST IS POISED TO IMPACT CHOCOLATE PRICES IN SUPERMARKETS, JUST AS WE FILL OUR BASKETS FOR THE HOLIDAY.
THE SKYROCKETING COCOA PRICES ARE PROMPTING SOME CHOCOLATE COMPANIES TO CONSIDER RAISING PRICES THIS YEAR, ACCORDING TO A RECENT REPORT FROM BLOOMBERG.
DESPITE THESE CHALLENGES, CHOCOLATE MANUFACTURERS HAVE SEEN INCREASES IN PROFIT. HERSHEY’S MARGINS GREW MORE THAN 16 PERCENT IN 2022, WHILE MONDELEZ, THE COMPANY BEHIND CADBURY EGGS, ROSE TO NEARLY 14% A MORE THAN 5% JUMP OVER THE SAME PERIOD.
HOWEVER, THE U.S. NATIONAL CONFECTIONERS ASSOCIATION REMAINS OPTIMISTIC ABOUT EASTER CANDY SALES. WITH APPROXIMATELY 92% OF AMERICANS EXPECTED TO INDULGE IN CANDY AND CHOCOLATE THIS YEAR, CONFECTIONERY SALES DURING THE EASTER SEASON ARE PROJECTED TO SURPASS $5 BILLION.
