Deadly earthquake strikes China as COVID-19 lockdowns persist

Share

A deadly earthquake has torn through the southwest region of China. At least 66 people have died, more than 250 have been injured, and more than 11,000 are trying to evacuate. The 6.8 magnitude earthquake collapsed 243 houses and damaged 13,010 others. Authorities have identified around 500 potential geological hazards, referring to landslides and collapsed mountain roads.

Chinese policymakers have maintained the country’s COVID-19 protocols amid the natural disaster. Residents in Chengdu, 125 miles away from where the earthquake struck, cannot leave their homes due to COVID-19 restrictions. Despite apartment buildings in the city shaking from the earthquake’s impact, video has shown officials ensuring apartment building entrances remain locked with residents inside.

China has been the epicenter of COVID-19, and its lockdowns have drawn international attention. China still requires mandatory testing, mask wearing and quarantines. Despite recording a handful of COVID-19 cases, Chengdu’s lockdown appears to be the most severe since China’s largest city of Shanghai was placed in isolation over the summer. The Shanghai lockdown enforcement led to widespread complaints over shortages of food, medication and access to health care. Chengdu has taken similar measures.

Along with the earthquake wreaking havoc in China, authorities have also reported landslides that damaged homes, caused power interruptions and stranded residents. The earthquake and lockdown followed a heat wave and drought that led to water shortages and power cuts. China’s deadliest earthquake in recent years was a 7.9 magnitude quake in 2008 that killed nearly 70,000 people.
