The Kansas City Chiefs’ quest for a historic third straight championship hit a massive roadblock in the first half of Super Bowl LIX at the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Philadelphia Eagles have dominated thus far, leading 24-0 at the break.
Chiefs’ superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes down 17-0 and desperate to make something, threw his second interception of the game with 1:49 left in the half. Eagles linebacker Zach Baun made the diving catch to give Philadelphia the ball on the Chiefs 14-yard line.

Two plays later, AJ Brown scored on a 12-yard pass from quarterback Jalen Hurts to give the Eagles a nearly insurmountable 24-0 advantage.
Five minutes before that miscue, Eagles rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean made the play of the game, returning the first Mahomes interception 38 yards for a touchdown to make it 17-0.
Mahomes the three-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player, threw those interceptions on back-to-back passes. Before that, he had gone ten straight games without throwing an interception. That’s a testament to the Eagles defense, ranked number one in the league during the regular season. They are harassing Mahomes and making life miserable for the Chiefs, allowing just 23 total yards on 20 plays. In addition to the two interceptions, they have three sacks and have given up just one first down.
The Eagles got on the board first in Super Bowl LIX, midway through the opening quarter by using their famous “Brotherly Shove” quarterback sneak to score from one yard out. Hurts took it in to cap a seven-play drive that went 69 yards. The touchdown was set up on the previous play, a 28-yard pass to Jahan Dotson.
The lone Chiefs highlight in the first half came when Bryan Cook intercepted Hurts at the two-yard line to temporarily stop Philadelphia’s momentum.
Conspiracy theorists got a nice gift on the first drive of the game. The Eagles seemingly converted a fourth and two with a long pass from Hurts to AJ Brown but a dubious offensive pass interference call on Brown took the gain away and forced the Eagles to punt.
It didn’t help the Chiefs much however, the Eagles defense forced Kansas City to punt after four plays which led to the first touchdown.
At this point, the Chiefs have no answer for the Eagles on either side of the ball. However, if we’ve learned one thing watching Kansas City in the Super Bowl four of the last five years, it’s that you don’t count Mahomes and company out until the final whistle.
